ParaFishControl Final Conference: Innovative Strategies to Control Parasites in Aquaculture Farms

ParaFishControl held its final event via an online webinar on 11 March 2020. The event, which focused on innovative strategies to control parasites in aquaculture farms, was moved online for safety reasons amidst the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. The webinar was attended by aquaculture experts from industry, research institutions, policy and potential investors. The meeting organisers appreciated the flexibility and enthusiasm of participants in how they adapted to the online setting.
Five sessions showcased solutions developed by ParaFishControl partners over the project’s five-year duration. These covered topics including: current strategies used to fight parasitic diseases in farmed fish, processes needed to approve new treatments and vaccines in Europe, EU funded research and the new instruments that will be available in future, strategies to help fish farmers to control parasitic diseases in their farms and the new tools and strategies developed within the project to prevent, diagnose and treat parasitic diseases at farm level.
Advanced Course - Diagnostics and Prevention for Fish Parasite Control in Aquaculture

The Advanced Training Course "Diagnostics and Prevention for Fish Parasite Control in Aquaculture" was held in Zaragoza, Spain, from 21 to 25 October 2019. The event was organised by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), through the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ), and the ParaFishControl project, with the collaboration of PerformFISH, MedAID, and the University of Zaragoza.
ParaFishControl Workshop: "North European Fish Parasite Management Strategies in Aquaculture Farms"

More than 40 aquaculture industry and research representatives participated in the Workshop: "North European Fish Parasite Management Strategies in Aquaculture Farms", organised by the ParaFishControl project. The event was held at the Aquaculture Europe conference in Berlin, one of the key events in the calendar for the industry.The workshop started with an overview of the economic impact of parasitic diseases on Rainbow Trout, Atlantic salmon and carp. After that, the ParaFishControl partners presented the new tools and techniques developed within the project to diagnose, prevent and treat the most damaging parasites for fresh water and marine farmed species in North Europe - Lepeophtheirus salmonis, Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, Sphaerospora molnari, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Paramoeba perurans and Saprolegnia parasitica as well as zoonotic helminths.
ParaFishControl Industry Forum: "Mediterranean Fish Parasite Management Strategies"

The “Mediterranean Fish Parasite Management Strategies” industry forum, organised by ParaFishControl, was held in Porto, Portugal in the framework of the 19th International Conference on Diseases of Fish and Shellfish. The event focused on the parasites which have been most damaging to Mediterranean farmed species populations - Amyloodinium ocellatum, Ceratothoa oestroides, Enteromyxum leei, Enteromyxum scophthalmi, Enterospora nucleophila, Philasterides dicentrarchi, and Sparicotyle chrysophrii. The event was attended by 59 aquaculture experts coming from the industry, research institutions and policy makers interested in learning more on how to better control parasitic diseases in Mediterranean aquaculture farms.
Workshop "Bottlenecks in Diagnostics of Mediterranean Fish Diseases"

The 20th Zebra Fish Immunology/Vaccination Workshop was held in Wageningen, the Netherlands, from the 28th of April to the 2nd May 2019. The objective of the was to provide the participants with advanced knowledge, both theoretical and practical, on the immune system of fish. During the workshop the latest insights in evolution of the immune system and/or recent developments in vaccination were discussed. The programme of this event brought together specialists working with commercially important fish species and/or model species such as zebrafish. Several partners from ParaFishControl participated in this event to present the latest results obtained within the project.
Workshop "Control of Parasitic Diseases in Aquacultured Fish - Innate and Acquired Resistance"

ParaFishControl organised a short training course and workshop with the title “Control of parasitic diseases in aquacultured fish – innate and acquired resistance” at the University of Copenhagen on April 30th, 2019.This event brought together over 70 participants from the aquaculture industry, experts, scientists and postgraduate students to discuss various issues and trends critical to aquaculture and genetics.
Workshop "Sustainable Fish Health Control"

The workshop on “Sustainable Fish Health Control” was organised by ParaFishControl in collaboration with DAFINET and BANGFISH on October 23rd, 2018. More than 40 international proefessionals and experts from various countries (Norway, Bangladesh, India, China, Indonesia, Italy, Denmarks) participated in the workshop.
Training Course "Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases of European Seabass and Gilthead Seabream"

ParaFishControl organised a dedicated training course on the diagnosis of parasitic diseases of European sea bass and gilthead sea bream. This training was co-organised by the University of Udine and the University of Bologna and was held on September 13th and 14th 2018 in Udine (Italy).

ParaFishControl Aquaculture Industry Forum "Industry and Academia Knowledge Exchange on Fighting Parasitic Diseases"

Aquaculture industry and research representatives participated in the first ParaFishControl Industry Forum on Tuesday 5 September 2017 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The event was part of the 18th International Conference on Diseases of Fish and Shellfish, and aimed to explore how the European aquaculture sector could benefit from the latest research in the area. The event facilitated effective knowledge exchange on the latest developments in fighting parasitic disease affecting aquaculture, between academia, industrial companies and fish farmer associations. This is an important goal of the ParaFishControl project, an EU Horizon 2020-funded research project that aims to improve our understanding of fish-parasite interactions and develop innovative solutions and tools to prevent, control and mitigate harmful parasites which affect the main fish species farmed in Europe.
Training Course "Fish Nutrition Research: Recent Advances and Perspectives"

Research results and conclusions from ParaFishControl, and other EU funded projects like ARRAINA and AQUAEXCEL2020 were presented at the training course on “Fish Nutrition Research: Recent Advances and Perspectives”. The course was organised by Prof Jaume Pérez-Sánchez from the Nutrigenomics and Fish Growth Endocrinology Group of the Institute of Aquaculture Torre de la Sal (IATS-CSIC) and was sponsored by the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC).
18th Fish Vaccination Workshop
